Example: A Year 7 English teacher wants peer tutoring pairs where each high-ability reader works with a lower-ability student. She has 12 students — 6 High, 6 Low — and needs exactly 6 pairs, each with 1 High + 1 Low. She also has a few student preferences to honour.
We've pre-loaded 12 students across 2 ability levels — hit the Generate Groups button (bottom right) to try it. In the Generate Groups dialog, add a category entry: 1 High + 1 Low per pair (6 pairs of 2). Preferences are pre-loaded — the algorithm honours them while keeping the ability balance intact.
With pairs, the algorithm must honour both the category constraint (1 High + 1 Low) and any student preferences simultaneously. The algorithm reports group satisfaction so you can see how well requests were honoured.
