Clever Groups is a grouping tool that gives every classroom grouping decision an evidence base. Enter student preferences — who they collaborate well with, who they'd choose to work alongside — and the algorithm builds fair, balanced groups that reflect real working relationships across the whole class.
Example: A Year 10 English teacher has 12 students forming collaborative writing groups for the term. Rather than seating students by proximity or rotating the roll, she collects preferences first — the algorithm finds the arrangement that satisfies the most requests across the whole class, creating groups students are invested in from day one.
We've pre-loaded 12 students with preferences already entered — hit the Generate Groups button (bottom right). We've pre-populated 4 groups of 3 in the group distribution window, so just hit the Create button. Click any student's preference button (green when preferences are set) to see or edit who they'd like to work with. A registered account lets students submit their own preferences directly.
Unlike tools that assign groups randomly or by gut feel, Clever Groups maximises total preference fulfilment across the whole class. The algorithm reports group satisfaction so you can evaluate how well the grouping worked and compare arrangements over time.
Try it free — register to let students submit preferences directly and save your grouping results all year.
