Clever Groups is a group creator that turns student preferences into high-performing classroom teams. Group composition shapes how students collaborate — and preferences give you the data to create groups that work, not just groups that exist.
Example: A Year 9 science teacher has 12 students working in term-long project teams. She wants groups where students feel comfortable enough to take academic risks together. She asks each student for their top two preferred lab partners — the algorithm creates 4 groups of 3 that honour as many preferences as possible across the class, not just the loudest voices.
We've pre-loaded 12 students with preferences already entered — hit the Generate Groups button (bottom right). We've pre-populated 4 groups of 3 in the group distribution window, so just hit the Create button. Click any student's preference button (green when preferences are set) to see or edit who they'd like to work with. A registered account lets students submit their own preferences directly.
Rather than creating one well-matched group while leaving others unmatched, Clever Groups maximises total preference fulfilment across the whole class — every student's preferences count equally. The algorithm reports group satisfaction so you can see how well the arrangement performed.
Try it free — register to let students enter their own preferences and create groups you can save and revisit all year.
