Joining via your teacher’s link Recommended

The easiest way to join is to use the link your teacher shares with you. It looks like:

clevergroups.com/join-team?join_code=XXXX

Your teacher may share this as a link, a QR code, or display it on the board. Here’s what to do:

1. Open the link or scan the QR code on your device.
2. Enter your name when prompted.
3. A guest account is created for you automatically — no email address required.
4. You’re taken straight to the preferences page to submit your choices.

Joining as a guest (without a link)

If you don’t have your teacher’s link, you can create a guest account manually:

1. Go to clevergroups.com/join-team (or choose Join a Team from the menu).
2. Enter your name and the team code your teacher gave you, then click Join Team.
3. You’re taken straight to the preferences page to submit your choices.

How your guest account is stored

Your guest account is saved as a browser cookie on the device you used to join — no email address or password required. As long as you use the same browser on the same device, you’ll be recognized automatically each time you return.

Each guest account also has a guest code — a unique string you can use to log back in from any device. Find it at clevergroups.com/guest when logged in (click Show guest code). Save it somewhere safe.

What to do if you lose access

If you clear your browser cookies, switch to a different device, or use a different browser, your guest account will not be recognized. You have two options to recover it:

Option 1 — Log in with your guest code (recommended)

1. Go to clevergroups.com/guest.
2. Scroll to the Login section and enter your guest code.
3. You’ll be logged back into your account with all your teams and preferences intact.

Option 2 — Rejoin with your teacher’s code

If you don’t have your guest code:

1. Go to clevergroups.com/join-team.
2. Enter your name and the same team code your teacher gave you.
3. A new guest account will be created — your previous preferences may not carry over, so let your teacher know if you need to resubmit them.

How to remove access from this device

Clearing the cookie for clevergroups.com signs you out of Clever Groups on that browser and device. On most browsers: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cookies. Your account still exists and remains accessible from any other device where you’re already logged in, or by entering your guest code at clevergroups.com/guest.

Registering with an email address

You can also register at clevergroups.com/register with an email address. This gives you a persistent account across devices.

Submitting your preferences

Once you’ve joined the team, you’ll see a list of everyone else in the team. Nominate who you’d like to be grouped with, in order of preference:

• First preference — the person you most want to be with.
• Second preference, third preference … — further choices, if you’d like to submit more than one.

Your teacher may ask you to submit a specific number of preferences, or leave it open. If you’re not sure, submitting 2–3 preferences gives Clever Groups more to work with and usually produces better results for everyone.

Once you’re happy with your list, click Submit. You can come back and update your preferences at any time before your teacher generates the groups.

What happens after you submit

Your preferences are saved and visible to your teacher. When the teacher is ready, they’ll run Group Generation using the preferences the whole team has submitted — yours included.

Clever Groups tries to place everyone with at least one person they chose. Whether that’s possible depends on group sizes and how the preferences from the whole team fit together — it’s not always achievable for everyone, but Clever Groups works hard to get as close as it can.

Your teacher will share the group results with you when they’re done.
